Wild Animals Rescue Project

Introduction:

This Project is home to all wild species common in Thailand such as Gibbons, Macaques, slow Loris, Porcupine, Civet cat, and many more. Many of these animals are in need of protection, especially the primates. Some species have already been relocated here and the site will also be used to relocate infected gibbons from the The Gibbon Rehabilitation Project. An area has been set aside to form seven islands that will allow for a manageable and segregated unit, isolated from all other animals at the sanctuary. The sanctuary currently houses more than 100 animals. The aim of this project is to rehabilitate and provide long-term care for these animals, most of which have suffered from human abuses.

Moreover, another goal is to provide a sustainable program with a lasting impact by means of an education program in wildlife and conservation. It is crucial for the future success of this project that local communities's beliefs and behaviours change. Without those changes, we would not have the facilities or ability to care for these animals. We believe that educating the local people, especially children, will contribute to the end of illegal hunting and thus reduce the number of animals that have to be rescued.

The program:

Volunteers work six days a week, usually for 8 hours a day. Their duties mainly include food preparation, cleaning of cages, assisting in general animal welfare, and data collection. Furthermore, development of the site is an ongoing effort and volunteers are required to become involved in whatever stage the project is currently in. Suitable volunteers will be included in our education programs with the locals. An open-minded and flexible attitude is a definite requirement for all volunteers.

Activities:
1.Facilitating the following activities:

  • Monthly meeting with the community
  • Garbage management
  • Reduction of chemical substances
  • Formulation of plan for sustainable management of natural resources

2. Conducting training program for 20 community leaders and 20 youth leaders on eco-tourism, water quality monitoring and local tourist guidance.

3. Formulating plans and committee for eco-tourism.

4. Conducting training on alternative occupation for locals

Accommodation:

Volunteers will reside in traditional Thai style huts, located an hour away from Ranong town by local bus and another 6 kilometers from the main road. The huts are equipped with a shelf, fan, mosquito net, pillows and bed sheets. There is also a Thai style kitchen with a microwave and refrigerator, as well as satellite TV in the main area. There is a Thai style bathroom and toilet outside. Moreover, food is easily available at the local market and it is the perfect way for volunteers to learn how Thai people live. The Thai-Muslim villagers are very nice and friendly and have their own unique peaceful way of life. It is very important to be respectful of the local culture.
