The Dusky Langur watching and trekking safari Program
3 Days
This 3-day dusky langur watching and trekking tour takes you to one of the most beautiful Kaeng Krachan National Park in Thailand. You will have the opportunity to see the rare dusky
langur in its natural
habitat and learn about its behavior. (The Dusky Langur, also known as the Spectacled Langur, is found in the tropical forests and mountains of Myanmar, Malaysia and Thailand) During the trek you will also
see many birds and butterflies, and hopefully you get to see some other wildlife
as well. In the morning we can listen to the unique sound of the gibbons
that sing in the treetops. The Kaeng Krachan area is absolutely
breathaking and definately a site to visit if you come to
Thailand.
Kaeng Krachan National Park is one of the most preserved parks in Thailand. It covers 2200 square kilometers and is located 175 kilometers Southeast of Bangkok. It is the largest National Park of the country and offers a habitat to many plants and animals. There are 153 different protected species of animals including the tiger, elephant, gaur, deer, porcupine, monkey, wild boar and an incredible number of birds. The rare hornbills are one of the most beautiful birds here and they can easily been seen at the park.
About the Dusky Langur:
The Dusky Langur, also known as the Spectacled Langur, is found in the tropical forests and mountains of Myanmar, Malaysia and Thailand.
The average adult male Dusky Langur weighs approximately 8.3kg and females weigh approximately 6.5kg. Their faces are black with white around the eyes and over the center of the mouth. The back and the limbs are grey, and the hands and feet are black.
The Dusky Langur gives birth to a single offspring which is bright orange in colour and continues to darken after about one month. At three or four months the entire body is grey, but lighter than that of the adults. Infants are shared between females, and sometimes one adult female will watch as many as four infants while the other females rest and feed.
Adult males do not interact with many members of the group; their roles are confined to predator detection, maintenance of group cohesion during travel, and defense of territorial boundaries.
The Dusky Langur spends most of its time in the upper canopy levels of the forest eating leaves, unripe fruits and flowers. Groups will split-up during the day to form subgroups that forage and then reunite during the evening.
Day 1
At 8 o'clock in the morning you will be picked up from Bangkok and depart to Kaeng-Krachan National Park (Transfer to and from other cities in Thailand is also possible). We arrive at the information center at 10.30 in the morning. The forest ranger will welcome us and will take us further into the park to Ban Krang camp, which is Thailand's best place for butterfly and bird watching. Here we will set up camp and freshen up in the river or at the shower area. After lunch we will trek along a beautiful nature trail to see many different species of butterflies. When we return to the campsite, we will have some time to relax after today's hike. After dinner, we will study the nocturnal life of Kaeng Krachan near the campsite.
Day 2
We wake up early in the morning for a 1-hour dusky langur watching trek. We will search for the rare and colorful hornbill as well as many other species such as woodpeckers and kingfishers. After breakfast we will trek towards Panoen Thung camp. A nearby viewpoint gives us the opportunity to enjoy the beautiful scenery. We continue our hike towards the gorgeous Thor Thip waterfall were we can swim and relax. If we are lucky we can see some dusky langur's and listen to the unique sound of the gibbons that sing in the treetops. Lunch will be taken in the forest. When we return to the campsite in the afternoon, we will have a small break and leave for one more short trek to look for footprints of wild animals. If we find any, we will plaster the prints and head back for dinner.
Day 3
After breakfast, we will return to yesterday's nature trail and collect our plastered footprints. The prints can be taken home as a souvenir. This morning we will go for one more walk into the forest to spot the dusky langur and gibbon.
